Heck, one of my favorite NPC’s was named Ponda Boba. To this day, I default to Star Wars names for characters when I need to think of character names on the spot. The emperor was secretly a lich, just as Palpatine was secretly a sith. I didn’t know what I was doing or how to craft an engaging story line so I did the thing that every first time dungeon master does: I stole it! The BBEG of my first arc was an evil queen based off of Count Dooku, and the players later found that a well-liked emperor was secretly pulling the strings behind the scenes. My first campaign was heavily inspired by Star Wars. So naturally, people seek to combine the two. They’ve both shared the (incorrect) stigma of being enjoyed only by basement dwelling nerds and they’ve both shed that stigma and come to the forefront of the entertainment industry. Just like Star Wars, Dungeons and Dragons was “uncool” to like for many many years and discussion was generally kept to small circles, while being criticized by outsiders. Star Wars is just as heavily ingrained in nerd culture as D&D is and they’re both experiencing a renaissance of sorts at the moment. The D&D fanbase shares a happy overlap with Star Wars and many avid D&D fans will be at the theaters this week seeing The Rise Of Skywalker. With this weeks release of Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker, we’ve been thinking about how Star Wars aligns with 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons.
